New Year, New Ideas

A friend of mine is interning at Trivaris. They are a part of Innovation Night. Here is what she has to say:

What’s your idea? Innovation Night seeks new ‘Idea Sharers’

When is the last time you had a great idea. I mean that one great idea that you are sure will change the world. I’m sure some of you reading this right now have ideas for some of the best things yet to be invented, created, or even simply thought about. But instead of sharing your idea with someone you keep it bottle up in the closets of your mind; or on your computer; or in a scrap notebook somewhere. Or even on that napkin from Starbucks where countless caramel macchiatos inspire you. You obviously thought the idea had some merit or you wouldn’t still be thinking about it. It surfaces every now and again, but you insist on stifling it. Suffocating it and storing it in the back of your mind never to be seen again.

So, what’s the real reason you haven’t shared it with anyone? Are you so wrapped up with the creation of it all that “it’s too hard to explain to anyone else” or do you fear that your idea isn’t “good enough?” Or are you afraid that someone will take it? Whatever the reason, we all have those ideas in the back of our heads waiting for the right moment to let them out. The problem is those perfect moments where the stars align and the angels sing never seem to occur at that perfect time.

What if I said that the stars will align on Tuesday, January 25th and the angels start singing at about 7pm. The location is The Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington where Trivaris will host its fourth annual Innovation Night. Here, idea sharing is the name of the game.

Idea sharers are welcome to come out and share their ideas in a public forum buzzing with positivity and constructive feedback from people who can help direct you in the right path to starting to see your dreams take flight. The first step is to share. Be Bold! Dare to Dream!

Signing up is easy. All you need to do is contact Elaine Holding at 905-633-6354, eholding@sbpartners.ca or Cindy Porter 905-332-5433 ext. 205, cindy.porter@trivaris.com , to be put on the list. Space is limited and it’s first come first serve. What are you waiting for? It’s just a click or a phone call away!

Not sure if you want to share? Then come out and support those who do. See what the evening is all about and who knows...next year might be your year.

Dare to have a voice. Be Bold. Dare to dream.

Remember that the Wright brothers who changed the way we travel today started off with just an idea. Microsoft, FedEx, Google and Facebook, some of the most successful companies to date started off with just an idea. An idea is the spring board that sets in motion the sequence for success. Sharing that idea and getting the right constructive feedback is even more important in the realization of the goal.

14 Actors Acting

The New York Times created short films, ranging from 30 to 50 seconds in length, of the 14 most influential actors in cinema of the past year. As each actor takes on their roles silently, they represent a classic screen type.

I've always been told, from many acting coaches and teachers, that the best acting comes when the actor is doing little to nothing at all or doing the simplest tasks (like shaving; seen in Robert Duvall's short).

Each short's cinematography is composed beautifully and the musical scores give that extra classic feel. My favourites include James Franco, Tilda Swinton (who doesn't love a good Tilda Swinton?) and Jesse Eisenberg. Anthony Mackie's short reminds me a lot of Cary Grant in North by Northwest when he’s running from the airplane; you can definitely see the classic archetypes in 14 Actors Acting.

Miss Indie

I recently read an article that debated what it meant to be 'indie' in the music industry today. It looked at bands such as Dinosaur Jr., Arcade Fire and solo artist, Feist. All of these artists were at one point independent but are now signed to major record labels. So I beg to question, is it not every musician’s dream to make music, get signed to a label, become famous and acquire as many fans as possible? Why are we still debating what it means to be indie? Most indie groups still have a niche and a distinctive fan base anyway. I say stop asking questions and just start to enjoy the music. Who cares if the music you like is ironic, cool, independent, absurd or not - like what you want. I‘ll leave you with this, blog readers - my favourite Feist video:

As I mentioned in a previous post, we are learning to use some of the features of Adobe Photoshop. Here are the results.

The second set of photos make me laugh. I’m not sure if it’s suppose to look good or if it’s just for practice. Enjoy!

United. Every One. Every Day. Every Way.

My class is doing a United Way Fundraiser; our group has decided to hold a holiday photo booth. We'll be in the front lobby of Mohawk College on Tuesday, December 7 and at The Arnie PUB night on Wednesday, December 8. This works out perfectly because Wednesday's PUB is Ugly Christmas Sweater Pub! So come out and get your photo taken in your ugly sweaters and with your friends. For just $2 you can support the United Way and have a lovely holiday photo. Don't forget to RSVP via Facebook!

Other groups are holding raffles and cookie sales next week too, look for them throughout Mohawk during lunch breaks.

Picture Perfect

Portraits 009
My Pod and I (minus Stacey) recently took some portraits for an upcoming project in our Print Design and Application class. We’ll be working in Adobe Photoshop next week.
Here are some of the photos we took during out little photoshoot. Everyone meet Kiya on the left. Isn’t she gorgeous?
The photos were taken in the new wing at Mohawk College. The new addition features a Starbucks. Our class can not get enough of their holiday drinks. Starbucks is definitely a nice break from Tim Horton’s burnt tasting coffee.

This is Bailey. She’s married to a Brit and she's awesome!
The new wing features lots of seating arrangements for studying but also for our picture taking escapade.

I hope you enjoyed meeting some members of my pod. Maybe I’ll post the outcomes of our Photoshop project.
